Betsy the Pitbull
Abby and I went to the Humane Society today and I'd never been. I've ventured to Petsmart and seen those dogs, only to cry minutes or hours later. I tend to get so overwhelmed with how much I love all the dogs, I can even see potential in the 'mean' ones and feel awful for them. I start thinking about all the animal shelters, all the stray animals, and all the abuse that some of these animals face - and when you expand this beyond my city, state, and nation, it can become a bit daunting and heartbreaking (I promise I'm not this dramatic about everything - there are just so many animals that are never treated with love and care) SO I was apprehensive to go to the real Humane Society thinking that the more dogs would just cause more tears.
BUT then I fell in love with Betsy (colored like a cow).
I've always had small dogs and by small I mean small. My parents currently have a 5 pound dog, and the one before was 10 pounds.
For me to fall in love with a Pitbull, or large dog in general, isn't typical. I know they can be raised to be mean, but I also think it's important to recognize that they aren't born like that. They are just like any other dog when they are puppies and they can be super super sweet. Like Betsy.
I 'met' every dog there and pet all the ones I was allowed to...while walking around I noticed her immediately. She was quiet and looked so sad/serious. I crouched down and could hear her little whimper while most of the other dogs were jumping or trying to get our attention. Now, I'll admit I think all the dogs are cute in their own way, but this little(muscular and huge) girl really got my attention. She looked so pensive, like she had something important to say.
After figuring out that she was nice and wouldn't jump all over me, I actually got in the little room/cage with her. Abby joked that "she could literally kill you" and thank goodness she stayed sweet ;)
I sat down after a while and patted my legs twice, she immediately stopped what she was doing and came to sit in my lap - as if she were my 5 pound Morkie named "Trooper".
IT WAS PRECIOUS.
We played with her and took her outside - even turning Abby (who has had bad experiences with Pitbulls) into a Betsy lover.
I guess I'm blogging because I had a blast and realized that even dogs you think may act one way can truly be the sweetest and surprise you. I was somewhat stressed about postgrad life. I started the afternoon with a cynical and sarcastic attitude stressing about things that will work themselves out. I left the Humane Society 2 hours later feeling so much happier after leaving. It was a blast and I recommend it for anyone, who can beat free dog therapy :)
If I had a big yard, money, and time for Betsy I'd seriously be considering adopting her. If this were a few years down the road I'd be considering the investment. I want to go back and play with her but also really hope she gets adopted by someone wonderful. She's a cutie and deserves it. I knew I was having fun with her but after seeing the picture I was even surprised by just how happy she made me.

BE LOVE. Betsy is.
