What would you fight for?
So I'm sick today, which means I've watched a lot of television.... fortunately MTV's "True Life" was on.
I was expecting it to be vainly entertaining or something along those lines but it's really been inspiring.
This episode was about Saudi Arabia and the youth that live there. The youth that are trapped in traditions and restrictions that often times can't even be justified or validated but are simply a "No" for the society.
The episode mentioned how it is the birth place of Islam and how every day they stop to pray 5 times. Women are encouraged to pray at home.
These 4 youths that are focused on address issues of communications, love, music, and fashion...things we don't even register as being a privilege.
As Americans we can search the internet, read books, watch movies and have no real censorship.
We are able to fall in love multiple times before settling down, and that is accepted and often praised. We can date people that our parents may never even meet.
We can get on Itunes and could look at millions of songs.
We can shop online and could order whatever we want from all over the world.
These young people are fighting for things that we didn't even have to work for. They are risking their lives for small tastes of what we call freedom.
It started to make me wonder what I would fight for if I really had to work for what I wanted. Would I hold secret meetings to try to persuade people to demand freedom and rights for women. Would I risk my life and the little freedom that I had for speech. Would I dress like a guy just so I could ride a bike down the street like one 20 year old did.
What would you fight for?
What would you endanger your life for and the life of those closest to you?
It is a hard question to answer because I've never had to fight like these young adults have. I've never had to question the core values that I believe in because I'm so so lucky.
But I want to fight for myself and for others. I want to make a difference. I want to struggle and for that struggle to be so entirely worth the gain. I want to make a difference for an entire society.
Like the 20 year old girl in this video who wants Abayas (a traditionally black clothing that covers all but a woman's feet, hands, and eyes) to be colorful. Which in Saudi Arabia is a ridiculous desire that goes against a somewhat unspoken tradition.
These stories were really interesting and really inspiring. Check it out, It is definitely worth it.
