September 11th 2011
Today marks the 10 year anniversary of September 11th. Though anniversaries are normally thought of as joyful and exciting, this occasion brings about memories of lose and tragedy.
I can't believe it has been a whole decade since my 5th grade class was told about what happened in NYC. It is a moment that I'll never forget. I'm blessed to be distanced from the direct tragedy of that day but as an American I will never be fully separated from it. It's something that still doesn't make sense.(http://news.yahoo.com/photos/9-11-the-25-most-powerful-photos-1315611364-slideshow/25-most-powerful-photos-photo-1315610950.html) Looking at the pictures on this website seems as though I'm looking at clips from a movie. Only a few pictures in and I could feel my heart pounding. Thoughts of loss and death are impossible to avoid when you look at these 25 pictures. However, those thoughts and the determination and hope of so many Americans is what will allow the memory of those lost to live on. Though our thoughts and prayers can never outweigh the hurt and pain that has been caused, we are forever marked by September 11th, and it deserves our respect and our attention.
I think it's too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of life. It can cause us to give only fleeting thoughts to situations and circumstances that deserve so much more attention and focus.
Today is one of those days. Life will be happening all around us, but having real thoughts of September 11th on our minds is just a small fraction of what those directly affected by it deal with daily. Time may heal most wounds, but I don't think this one will ever be completely healed for our nation. That doesn't mean there isn't hope and a positive future. But it just means that we can't ever forget, and we shouldn't ever forget, what happened on that day ten years ago.
