"Half the Sky" Documentary

I LOVE "HALF THE SKY". I feel like I could read the book over and over and continuously watch the documentary, and still not be able to get enough.

At the same time that the stories break your heart, the spirit of the women involved put it back together again.  They have all been through unspeakable abuse and misfortune but shine brighter than I ever have. Inside and out they are some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Watching the documentary makes me want to hop on a plane with Nicholas Kristoff and Cheryl WuDunn. Throw in Olivia Wilde or Gabrielle Union and I'll be set.

Within this world I feel like there are so many other smaller worlds that operate independently from everyone else.  Our own worlds, which exclude those who don't know us well - your neighbors world who you don't know - a world across the ocean - the corruption down the street - the abuse in a foreign land - it all goes on and we seem to be blind to most of it. Except that first world that we live in, "our" world that we create. Even if it isn't a perfect one, it is the most tangible thing we can relate to.

These stories allow us to become a part of something else. They allow us to be aware of different worlds. Realistically we can't all jump on a plane or donate thousands of dollars to a cause but realistically we all can sure as hell care. We don't have an excuse not to. We would be depriving ourselves of self education and empathy if we just continued to ignore the other worlds around us.

The crazy thing is is that even as I talk about this issue there are thousands of others just as important, just as many stories to share. We should never stop trying to be a part of something beyond ourselves.  To extend that extra space in our hearts that is left over for the rest of the worlds around us. Even though I don't flawlessly execute that on a daily basis, I wish I did. This feeling right now is something that everyone should experience.  No one should go without it. It has the power to propel people to change. And it has the opportunity within it to make a difference.

If you have time you should invest in watching both parts of "Half the Sky".  You won't be disappointed.
