punks & then some good stuff...

I'm at a coffee shop with my roommate working on some homework....Now I will admit that we aren't old by any means, just 20 and 19, but we are not punks.

There were these two jerk kids(our age essentially) in here talking about drugs, their awful parents, and cussing trying to sound cool. If I was there parents I wouldn't be too happy either. I wanted to walk up to them and say "shut your face and try to be nice", but I refrained unfortunately. It is kind of sad when I can tell from across the room that you are trying that hard to be that "cool". If I can, it ain't workin' so well homes.

MOVING ON....

In literature we are currently talking about the aestheticism movement. Don't worry I'm a declared English major (as of today) and still had no idea what that word meant. I've learned that most simply it is about enjoying art and things for pleasure, and it is about enjoying the moment and not worrying what virtue or moral understanding it will give you.

"Arguing for Art: Aesthetic Prose" by: Walter Pater discusses how we should live in moment because they are constantly changing and aren't truly tangible. Tomorrow todays moments are gone. We also talked about how the physical body is made up of all these parts found in nature, these elements, and that creates an interconnectedness. The piece also emphasized individual thought and perception because its something that is unlike anyone else's. Two people experiencing the same moment can see it completely differently. Everything is open to ones own interpretation.
Here is my favorite quote from the Conclusion:
To burn always with this hard, gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life.
So enjoy all the moments, though constantly changing, may you see them with a clarity that is all your own.
