Half the Sky

-- there really is a limit to how much school work I can do in a given sitting...here is something I've found to try and break it up every now and again, and I feel like I'm truly learning about something that matters too. --

"Half the Sky" by Nicholas D. Kristof of the NYTimes and his wife Sheryl WuDunn is a book about "Turning oppression into opportunity for women worldwide".
I heard about this book from Olivia Wilde's website http://wildethings.org/ she is a successful actress but also seems to be a true activist. I find her really interesting and trust her opinions. She has a post about this book on her site and it lead me to look further into it. Within a few minutes I was on Amazon.com looking for a copy to order ASAP.

So far I've read the Introduction and Ch1. I have a few hundred more pages to go!
"Half the Sky" focuses on three main abuses women face: sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender-based violence, including honor killings and mass rape, and maternal morality.

I know that may sound terrible to a lot of you & I won't lie this book isn't exactly an easy read. It is heavy and serious but it calls for our attention. These things are taking place around the world right now to millions of women. A lot of the first hand accounts are disturbing and unfathomable because I've never been remotely close to anything these women have gone through. However, It profiles women who have experienced some of the most horrific times, but who rise to make a difference and who become empowered females.

It has taken me time to process and really grasp this book (and I'm just in the beginning)  BUT it has been truly worth it so far. It is a serious book about issues that most of us our blind to but an issue that I've grown to care about. It has caused me to stop and really question things.

Look into it if you want to, or try to find something that you want to be informed about. Sometimes things have to startle you to truly get your attention.

"This is a story of transformation. It is a change that is already taking place, and change that can accelerate if you'll open your heart and join in." - Kristof & WuDunn.
